Kathmandu: It has been nine days since Senior Orthopedic Surgeon Dr Govinda KC sat for 11th round of hunger strike at the Institute of Medicine, Maharajgunj demanding the improvement in the medical education and smooth and affordable health services to all particularly the less fortunate citizens in Nepal but the government has been playing a drama of having dialogues with the representatives of Dr KC but having no results at all.
To put pressure on the government to be serious about the demands of Dr KC, resident doctors have decided to halt the services at the Out Patient Department at the IOM, Maharajgunj effective on Wednesday, August 2, 2017.
Referring to the OPD-service freeze, chairman of the resident doctors association of IOM Dr. Kaschev Shrestha has said that it is the support for Dr KC, as the government has done nothing for the last 10 days except for symbolic dialogue causing the fast deterioration of health of Dr KC; so, the medical professionals have no choice but to stop the OPD services.
The hunger strike has done damage not only to the health of Dr KC but to the health of IOM, too, as it will have no revenue from the OPD services, and less revenues from other services, as most of the patients will be diverted to other hospitals.
The question has been whether the IOM could sustain the revenue losses, as it has to earn at least 40 percent of its expenditures the rest coming from the State budget. Both Dr KC and his supporters, and the government have to think about the sustainability of IOM otherwise both parties would be unwisely destroying the so valuable IOM.
