May 27, 2013: leaders of the four-party political mechanism held a meeting with the Chairman of Interim Election Council of Ministers Khil Raj Regmi at his Baluwatar official residence yesterday. They have agreed on building a consensus on the controversial issues within three days. To this end, they had scheduled to hold another meeting today morning.
During the meeting, Chairman Regmi urged the top leaders to resolve the differences among the four parties over the threshold of proportional representation, strength of the new CA and the precondition for the party registration among others. “I request all of you to forge consensus on the disputed issues of the election ordinance as soon as possible,” Chairman’s press advisor Bimal Gautam quoted him as telling the top leaders at the meeting, according to ‘gorkhapatraonline.com.’
Minister for Health and Population Bidyadhar Mallik present at the meeting said that the government sought the collective opinion of the four major parties on the controversial issues such as the threshold of proportional representation, the size of the CA and provision for ten thousands signatures requirement for the party registration, and barring the crime-convicted people from contesting the upcoming elections, according to the news posted on ‘gorkhapatraonline.com.’
President of NC Sushil Koirala did not show up at the meeting to be held at Baneswor in Kathmandu today morning on the pretext of his engagement in other business but the local media reported that Koirala had made it an excuse not to attend the meeting because Chairman of Interim Election Council of Ministers Khil Raj Regmi snubbed him when he asked Regmi to quit the position of the chief justice of the Supreme Court of Nepal at the meeting held yesterday at the residence of Regmi.
Vice-president Parmananda Jha has said that it is “stupidity” to demand chairman Regmi to quit the office of the Chief justice of the Supreme Court of Nepal. “Political parties should not put pressure on him by asking for his resignation from the post of Chief Justice. He is after all a civil servant and it is natural for him to try to retain his post,” Vice-president Jha said speaking at an event held at Pathibhara of Taplejung district where he was opening a Pathibhara trail and declaring the Pathibharadham temple a “Plastic Free Zone,” according to nepalnews.com.
