Missing anthropologist: Dor Bahadur Bista

Issue 03, January 20, 2008

Whereabouts of well-known anthropologist Dor Bahadur Bista has not known yet since he went missing from Nepal Nepalgunj in 1995. It was his practice to go to some remoter area for research without informing his family and then come back after completing his research. He had been practicing it since a foreign agency in Nepal dropped him in some remote areas by a helicopter for doing research and then picked him up after completion of the research in early 1970s. Currently, nobody knows whether he has been doing similar sorts of research or something has happened to him.

His latest book was called “Fatalism and Development” that created some ripples among the international community after its publication in 1991. He was always against the discrimination done against the ethnic communities, and against the caste system.

On January 14, 2008, a group of anthropologists and others held a talk program to highlight the contribution made by Dor Bahadur Bista to the social development in Nepal. (TRN, Jan. 15, 2008)
