Movement For Undivided Far Western Region Takes Momentum

Issue 20, May 13, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

May 6, 2012: the movement launched for an undivided far western region calling for an indefinite western region shutdown has been taking momentum after 10 days. Various youth organizations affiliated to different political parties have intensified their movement for a unified far western region. The UCPN-Maoist has included Kailali and Kanchanpur districts in the Tharuwan province provoking the locals to launch a movement for maintaining a unified far-west region.

Political parties have been quietly supporting the movement. However, yesterday, the UCPN-Maoist, NC and CPN-UML have jointly urged the locals in the far western region to call off their indefinite shutdown but the locals are not in a mood to do so.

The Madhesi People’s rights Forum-Democratic: one of the main allies of the UDMF has openly supported the movement for an integrated far-western region. To the surprise of all political leaders, the Forum that has been demanding one-Madhes province has participated in the Saturday demonstration.

However, leaders of the Tharu community have argued that the Kailalia and Kanchanpur districts are the parts of the Tharuwan province, as the Tharu community densely populates these districts. According to the demand of the Tharu community, the Tharuwan province should comprise Dang, Banke, Bardiya, Kailali and Kanchanpur districts. To this end, the Tharu community has demonstrated and held a rally in Dhangadi.
