Mutual Benefit both to Nepal and China

Issue 49, December 07, 2008

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

Both Nepalese and Chinese authorities claimed that both nations have benefited from the so-called mutual understanding reached between the Nepalese authorities and the visiting Chinese dignitary. Nepal benefited from getting more than a billion rupees in grant whereas China benefited from the protest-free Chinese embassy in Kathmandu.

It looks like the history is repeating. The Maoist-led coalition government has effectively stopped the Tibetan exiles from protesting against the Chinese rule in Tibet at the Chinese embassy in Kathmandu despite the outcry of human rights activists. In the late 1960s, the then Nepalese king assisted the Chinese in crushing the Khampa rebels fighting against the Chinese rule in Tibet.

On Wednesday, December 03, 2008, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and his Nepalese counterpart Upendra Yadav signed on ‘Economical and Technical Cooperation Deal’, China agreeing to provide Nepal with a financial grant of RMB 100 million ($14.8 million = Rs 1.2 billion). China also agreed to provide Nepal with a “soft loan” of $200 million.

Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and Nepalese Minister for Physical Planning and Works Bijaya Kumar Gacchedar jointly cut the red ribbon in Kathmandu to officially initiate the construction of the 16 km Syaprubensi - Rasuwamadi road linking Nepal with the border town called Kerung on the Tibetan side. It is to be completed in 18 months

Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi in a meeting with Nepalese Prime Minister Prachanda appreciated the progress made in the peace process in Nepal and formally extended an invitation to the Prime Minister to visit China, second time. In return Nepalese Prime Minister repeated the one-China policy of his government.

The Chinese dignitary with his delegation left Nepal on Thursday, December 04, 2008 for Myanmar.
