Nepal Achieving Education For All
By KTM Metro Reporter
December 18, 2013: the Ministry of Education has stated that it is all set to achieve Education for All (EFA) goal. The Ministry of Education (MoE) has started reviewing EFA achievements made during the past years; the EFA program will wind up within two years, according to the news on ‘gorkhapatraonline.com’.
Nepal has also committed to the worldwide EFA goal. The EPA was started in 2001. EFA has seven goals of allowing all children to have access to the pre-primary level of education, free and compulsory primary education, and making at least ninety percent population literate, focusing on equality, providing quality education and right to enhance education in their own language.
Director General of Department of Education Dr Lavdev Awasthi informed that despite the country making some achievements in literacy target, it has still been unable to upgrade the quality of education. Therefore, the Ministry has been focusing on the quality education in coming years, Dr Awasthi added.
Currently, 34,000 pre-primary schools are running in the country. Ninety-five percent children have been enrolled at the school level education. Number of female teachers has been increasing at the school level. The Ministry has been putting all its effort on implementing free and compulsory education. Dr. Awasthi said that education must be the agenda of other Ministries, too but that has not happened, yet.
Experts argued that Nepal has not achieved its goals due to the insufficient investment in students. Nepal has been making an investment of $ 200 a year in each student while other nations have been making $800 investment a year.
Currently, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has been supporting the government to prepare the EFA national implementation report.
