By KTM Metro Reporter

August 26, 2012: Nepalis held a memorial function to late Nepalese Woman Leader Mangala Devi Singh garlanding her statue in Kathmandu today. She was the spouse of Ganesh Man Singh dubbed as the father of the Nepalese democracy. She was born in Kathmandu in 1924. She was married to Ganesh Man Singh: a member of the then high society family.

Even in 1947 when the despotic Rana rulers were in power, Mangala Devi Singh set up a Women’s Association, and fought for the women’s rights. She demanded the provision for voting rights for the women to be made in the constitution drafted by the then Rana Prime Minister Padma Shumsher.

Mangala Devi Singh also set up a Padmakanya School in Kathmandu especially for girls to give them an equal opportunity of education.

Mangala Devi Singh along with her legendary husband Ganesh Man Singh had spent her whole life on fighting for democracy in Nepal.
