Nepali Congress Candidate Elected for Constitutional Committee Chair
BY KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu
On August 28, 2009, in the election held for the Chair of Constitutional Committee vacated by Madhav Nepal to be the Prime Minister, Nepali Congress candidate Nilamber Acharya elected by 29 votes whereas his rival candidate of Unified Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist Narayan Kaji Shrestha ‘Prakash’ has received 21 votes. The Chair has remained vacant for the last three months.
For the reason the major political parties have not been able to resolve the controversy over the language the Vice-president has used for taking the oath of office, members of the Tarai Madhesh Democratic Party have boycotted the election for the Chair of the Constitutional Committee.
Nilamber Acharya was the member of the constitution-drafting committee for drafting the Constitution of Nepal of 1990. The then Constitution had a number of flaws that gave the former king to grab the power. We hope that this time Mr. Acharya would formulate a sound constitution that would last for a long time.
Nilamber Acharya was the member of the Communist Party of Nepal led by Vishnu Bahadur Manandhar. After the People’s Movement for democracy in 1990, Mr. Acharya quit the Communist Party of Nepal and joined the Nepali Congress led by President Girija Prasad Koirala.
