Nepalis Hold ‘Brother Worship’
By Kathmandu Metro Reporter in Kathmandu
Nepalese Hindus across the world have celebrated ‘Brother Worship’ on October 19, 2009. On this day, sisters perform religious rituals of ‘Brother Worship’ to the brothers for their long lives and prosperity, and then offer various sweets and other good food to the brothers. Brothers in turn present sisters with gifts.
Brothers having no sisters go to the shrine to Lord Shiva at the Ranipokhari in Kathmandu and get blessed from the lord on this day. This shrine is opened to the public only for this purpose on this day every year.
In Kathmandu, Anjali Maskey has been performing ‘Brother Worship’ for everybody wishing to have the blessing of her at Kasthamandap every year. She has been using her own resources for holding such a public ‘Brother Worship’. She does not accept any gift from anybody in return for the ‘Brother Worship’. In the past few years, even foreign visitors have been seen sitting with Nepalis to get blessings of sister Anjali for long lives and prosperity.
Anybody wishing to sit for ‘Brother Worship’ from sister Anjali needs to sign up a few days before the day of ‘Brother Worship’ so that she would make sure everything is arranged for the number of brothers that have signed up for ‘Brother Worship’.
