Political Drama Continues In Nepal

July 23, 2010: the legislature could not elect a Prime Minister in the election held today. Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Prachanda received 241 thus reducing one vote from the votes he had received in the previous election whereas Vice-president of NC Ram Chandra Poudel has improved receiving 123 votes from the 114 votes he had received in the election held on Wednesday July 21. The Speaker has decided to hold next election on August 02 giving sufficient time to the leaders for talking to each other for garnering support for their candidate.
The CPN-UML leaders and Madheshi political parties in block did not cast their votes.
The CPN-UML leaders have been saying that they would vote only for the candidate that could garner two-thirds majority, as the majority government led by Madhav Nepal could not do anything. So, the majority government no matter who leads would not be able to achieve anything hence no meaning to vote for a majority government.
However, some political analysts believe that adopting this policy, Madhav Nepal has tricked Jhalanath Khanal to be out of race for a Prime Ministerial position. The policy of Madhav Nepal is, “If I am not why should you be the Prime Minister?”
The Madheshi leaders have been thinking to have a major share in the power cake. They have revived their old demand for autonomous one Madhesh province, and enforcement of the eight-point agreement they have reached with the Government of Nepal. That is the price they want to vote on their votes.
Officiating Deputy Prime Minister Sujata Koirala has suggested his party leaders saying, “if you guys could not garner two-thirds majority why you should not pave the way for the Maoists to form a new consensus government provided they agree on returning the seized property, restructuring the YCL and so on.”
The European Union and United States have been concerned with the delay in forming a new government and have suggested the Nepalese political leaders to be serious negotiators and compromisers for completing the peace process and writing of a new constitution forming a new government without delay.
