Issue 07, February 17, 2013

By KTM Metro Reporter

February 17, 2013: after the meeting with Prime Minister Dr Bauram Bhattarai yesterday, former Acting Chief Election Commissioner Nil Kantha Upreti told the reporter of the ‘Gorkhapatra’ that they have talked about the possibility of holding elections in June.

Upreti said that he had told the prime minister elections were possible in June if the political parties work together and participate in the elections, as the legal hurdles to the elections could be removed by the consensus of the political parties, and fill up the vacant positions of the Election Commissioners.

To make the elections in June possible, the Election Commissions should have all commissioners by the third week of February, and then Election Commission should be able to complete all technical matters by the last week of February.

Concerning the media report on appointing him to the position of the Chief Election Commissioner, he told the ‘Gorkhapatra’ reporter that he also had read the media report but he had no official offer, and he made it clear that the current government would not be ale to appoint a Chief Election Commissioner with the desire of a single party; so the consensus of all parties is required to do so.
