Prime Minister Off To Rio Brazil For Conference Despite the Opposition

June 18, 2012: Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai left Kathmandu for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil today by the Jet Airways regular flight to attend the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development dubbed as the Rio+20 summit from June 20 to 22, 2012.
Prime Minister Bhattarai has a 21-member team to attend the summit. He has his revolutionary partner and spouse Hisila Yami with him. So, his life would not be so boring even so far away from the country.
His Deputy Bijaya Gacchedar is officiating the office of prime minister while Dr. Bhattari would be busy with attending the seminar and meeting with other heads of states and heads of governments in Brazil.
His opponents have been calling him a caretaker government but he did not agree on their arguments stating the Interim Constitution of Nepal of 2007 has no such provision for a caretaker prime minister as they would like to call him. However, the opposition leaders have been demanding him to quit the office for them to have the office. Today, the opposition leaders particularly of NC and CPN-UML unleashed their cadres to attack the motorcade of the prime minister while he was driving to the International Airport in Kathmandu. Some of them stoned his vehicle in the name of protecting democracy in Nepal. So, what the democracy means in Nepal
Chairman of CPN-UML Jhalanath Khanal opened the national cadres' meeting at the Central Meeting Hall in Kathmandu today. In his political report, Mr. Khanal has parroted the same story of blaming the UCPN-Maoist for the dissolution of the CA and call for the fresh election to a new CA: the two most undemocratic and unconstitutional moves the UCPN-Maoist had made to the amuse of the cadres. Not realizing the fresh election to a new CA is the democratic way of getting the fresh mandate, Mr. Khanal has been vehemently opposing it. Nobody knows how his cadres have taken the chairman saying the fresh election is the most undemocratic one and opposing it. If the Chairman does not understand democratic norms and values how the cadres would.
However, the ethnic and Madheshi leaders did not show up in the meeting. Chairman Khanal and his party have been deadly against the identity-based federalism that the ethnic and Madheshi people cherish so much.
One of the latest political news is Vice-chairman of UCPN-Maoist Mohan Vaidya Kiran has officially declared a new party dubbed as a Communist Party of Nepal-Revolutionary Maoist in the meeting of the cadres supporting to break away. Mr. Vaidya became the chairman of the new party. Good luck to Mr. Chairman.
Speaking at a broader interaction gathering held by the central policy and training department of the party, NC President Sushil Koirala said that the current political crisis was a result of the Maoist mentality of capturing state power, and the party split was only a drama played as a strategy and used it for political benefit and to buy time, ‘The Rising Nepal’ of today quotes Sushil Koirala as saying.
