Prime Minister To Protect Human Rights Of Nepalis
By KTM Metro Reporter
December 11, 2011: speaking at an event held to mark the 63rd International Human Rights Day at the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Nepal yesterday, Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has said that his government is committed to uphold the human rights of citizens, ‘The Rising Nepal’ of today writes.
However, Dr. Bhattarai has closed the UN Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNOHCHR) in Nepal on Thursday, December 08, 2011 just two days before the 63rd International Human Rights Day despite the UN Secretary General and the international community in Kathmandu urging him to extend the term of UNOHCHR. NHRC has also written to Prime Minister Dr. Bhattarai with recommendation for extending the term of UNOHCHR. Nepalese human rights activists also have urged the government of Dr. Bhattarai to extend the term of UNOHCHR but he has failed to listen to them, too.
Now, Prime Minister Dr. Bhattarai has been saying that the government of Jhalanath Khanal had decided not to extend the term of UNOHCHR; he has simply enforced the decision. What an excuse! The prime minister has. He can say such things to anybody in his party and his followers would believe him but we don’t believe it. If Dr. Bhattarai is for protecting the human rights of Nepalis he needed to extend the term of UNOHCHR.
The irony is that his cabinet has made a decision on recommending the presidential parole to Balkrishna Dhungel convicted of the murderer and the Supreme Court of Nepal has ruled to sent him to life imprisonment with the confiscation of his property. The government of Dr. Bhattarai has not arrested the convicted murder and put him in jail so far, as he is the member of the prime minister’s party. How can we believe Dr. Bhattarai is for protecting the human rights when he is for pardoning the murderer without considering the rights of the victims to justice? Consequently, Dr. Bhattarai has lost the legitimacy of remaining in the office.
