November 22, 2012: Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai addressed the nation today evening coinciding the seventh anniversary of singing off the Comprehensive Peace Agreement the then CPN-Maoist had reached with the government in 2006 ending the decade-long people’s liberation war.
Addressing the nation, Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai made an appeal to all the political parties for building a consensus on all political matters to enable the government to hold elections to a new CA on any one day of the mid April to mid May 2013, and said that his government and he were ready to make any sorts of sacrifice to hold the elections.
The prime minister explained in his address that the government adopted the budget of his predecessor to follow a consensus, and a one-third budget earlier this fiscal year, too was following a consensus; however, the opposition created hurdles to the passage of the budget because the opposition was afraid of the pro-people program that would earn the public support for his government.
The Prime Minister said that his government was never a hurdle to building a political consensus; he was ready to quit the office if the opposition were to build a consensus, and he would continue to make efforts on building a national political consensus; a national consensus would not be difficult to build if the opposition were to shed the partisan interest and work for the national interest..
The Prime Minister also said that his government could not hold the elections scheduled for the November 22, and has to postponed for six months because the opposition parties did not cooperate with the government on removing legal hurdles to the elections; he also explained that a new constitution could not be promulgated due to the leaders opting status quo did not budge from their stand.
The Prime Minister said a lasting peace, promulgation of a new constitution, rule of law and development of the country are the top agenda of his government.
Some opposition leaders labeled the prime minister’s address to the nation as the ploy to stay on in power while others brushed it off as meaningless.
