Reestablishment of Ministry for Water Resources

Issue 28, July 12, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On July 5, 2009, a group of experts in the water resources has held a talk program on the need for reestablishment of Ministry for Water Resources. Immediately after coming to power, Prime Minister Madhav Nepal has split the Ministry for Water Resources into the Ministry for Energy and the Ministry for Irrigation for making room for the leaders of political parties aspiring for ministerial jobs.

Speaking at the program, experts in water resource development have urged the government to reestablish the Ministry for Water Resources, as both the Ministry for Energy and the Ministry for Irrigation is not fully capable of developing the vast water sources Nepal possesses. They also have said that Acts and Laws on the water resources have remained defunct and almost all the rules and regulations on the electricity are based on the defunct Water Resource Act.

A few days ago, the experts in water resources have also submitted a memo to Prime Minister Madhav Nepal demanding to reinstate the Ministry for Water Resources.
