Regional Seminar On Natural Disaster Management And Humanitarian Assistance

April 4, 2012: A three-day Regional Seminar On Natural Disaster Management And Humanitarian Assistance is held in Kathmandu with a view to develop a common regional perspective on plan, management and implementation among the armies in the region and aimed at sharing knowledge and skills on disaster preparedness among the participating countries. The seminar also provides SAARC nations with a platform to share their practices to deal with disaster management and humanitarian assistance.
Representatives from the SAARC countries, high officials of US Pacific Command and Chinese military officials are participating in the three-day seminar. Altogether 60 delegates and observers of SAARC countries, China and the US are taking part in the regional seminar.
Speaking at the inaugural session, Chief of Army Staff Chhatraman Singh Gurung said, "cooperation and collaboration among the neighboring countries will help reduce the risks during natural disasters while learning lessons from the past experiences."
Indian Army Chief General VK Singh arrived in Nepal today to attend the seminar. Gen Singh is leading a three-member delegation. Indian Army Chief Gen V K Singh met with his Nepalese counterpart Chhatraman Singh Gurung at the Nepal Army Headquarters in Kathmandu and discussed bilateral cooperation and strengthening of military ties between the two countries. Gen Singh will address the concluding session of the seminar chaired by the Nepalese Army Chief.
Gen Singh also will call on President Ram Baran Yadav, Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai and Deputy Prime Minister Bijaya Gacchedhar holding the portfolio of Minister for Defense during his stay in Kathmandu.
