Resettlement of Bhutanese Refugees

Issue 03, January 20, 2008

The state-run newspaper ‘The Rising Nepal’ of January 17, 2008 reported that the Core Group of Nations such as America, Australia, Canada, Denmark and Norway said that hopefully more than 13,000 Bhutanese refugees would be resettled from Nepal in the United States, Australia, Canada and elsewhere in 2008. They opened the office of the International Organization for Migration in Damak, Nepal in January 2008 to process the refugees’ documents for resettlement. Issuing a statement on behalf of the Group, US Ambassador Nancy J. Powell and Chair of the Group hoped that an additional 20,000 refugees, who have chosen resettlement, would be starting new lives by the end of 2009.
