Scrambling To Form A New Government
By KTM Metro Reporter
July 19, 2010: while July 21 deadline set by the President to form a majority government is approaching, leaders of the three major political parties such as UCPN-Maoist, NC and CPN-UML have been scrambling to form a new majority government.
The NC has already designated its candidate for Prime Minister whereas other two major parties have not made decision on it. Most probably, the CPN-UML will designate its chairman Jhalanath Khanal. The UCPN-Maoist leaders have been saying that their party doesn’t see any leader other than Prachanda as the candidate for Prime Minister. The fourth block: the Madheshi parties taken together don’t see any possibility of leading a government. They collectively might support the party that shows sympathy for their concerns. They are for federalism, autonomous Madhesh province, and proportional representation of all people in the state administration, police and army.
The 601-member has four power centers: the three major political parties and the block of the Madheshi political parties. The UCPN-Maoist has sufficient votes for forming a government with any one of the three blocks means NC, CPN-UML and the Madheshi block. NC, CPN-UML and the Madheshi block together can form a new government under any one of them or anyone of them in cooperation with the UCPN-Maoist.
If the political leaders keep their ideology and don’t work on the individual interest but in the interest of the nation, then the UCPN-Maoist and the Madheshi block are near to each other concerning the institutionalizing the federal democratic republic of Nepal. However, it is hard to say how serious the Madheshi leaders are for keeping their commitments to federalism, autonomous Madhesh province and proportional representation of all people in the state administration, police and army.
