Show Cause Notice On Karki's Appointment

Issue 20, May 19, 2013

By KTM Metro Reporter

May 16, 2013: a single bench of Justice Ramkumar Prasad Shah of the Supreme Court of Nepal issued an order to the Constitutional Council (CC) on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 to submit the reason for appointing Lokman Singh Karki to the chief of the Commission on Investigation into Abuse of Authority (CIAA), according to the news in ‘gorkhapatra’ of today.

Advocate Om Prakash Aryal had filed a petition at the Supreme Court of Nepal demanding to annul the appointment of Lokman Singh Karki made by the CC to the chief of the CIAA stating Karki had been fired making him not eligible for any state job.

President Dr Ram Baran Yadav appointed Lokman Singh Karki on the recommendation of the CC chaired by Khil Raj Regmi on May 8, 2013. On the same morning, the Acting Chief of Supreme Court of Nepal Damodar Prasad Sharma sworn in Karki to the office of the Chief of the CIAA.

The four-party political mechanism made recommendation to the CC for appointing Karki to the chief of the CIAA. Later President of NC Sushil Koirala had apologized to the public for agreeing on the recommendation for the Karki’s appointment. Chairman of CPN-UML Jhalanath Khanal also realized that the appointment of Karki was a mistake. But they had shamelessly agreed on recommending Karki to the chief of the CIAA even knowing that Karki was a tainted man and had been made not eligible for any future state employment.
