Situation conducive to Election
By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu
After the monitoring of the electoral situation in various parts of Nepal by four teams of the Nepal Human Rights Commission (NHRC), the member of and spokesman for NHRC Gauri Pradhan said in Lalitpur on March 23, 2008 that an election wave has been created with the large-scale participation of people in election activities; and the preparation for the election for a Constituent Assembly is satisfactory according to ‘The Rising Nepal’ of March 24, 2008.
The political parties’ election campaign, the Election Commission’s voters’ education, the security preparation, and the preparation for the election observation are found to be satisfactory during the monitoring of the electoral preparations in places such as Nepalgunj, Dhangadhi, Pokhara and Biratnagar done by the four teams headed by members of the NHRC.
However, the murder of some candidates for a Constituent Assembly election and party workers in some Terai districts, confrontation between the political cadres of various parties during the election campaign, obstruction to some party leaders in campaigning in some areas have created terror among the masses, the spokesman for the NHRC said.
The team led by NHRC Member Ram Nagina Singh went to Nepalgunj, member Dr. KB Rokaya to Dhangadhi, NHRC Chairman Kedar Nath Upadhay and Secretary Bishal Khanal to Pokhara and Spokesman Pradhan to Biratnagar to monitor the electoral situation. The teams acquired information from various government offices, civil society, NGO representatives and other concerned agencies during the monitoring.
The NHRC will inform the Nepal Government, Election Commission, security bodies and political parties about some aspects seen in the course of monitoring, which needed to be reformed.
