State Visit of Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa

On March 2, 2009, Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa along with the first lady Shiranthi arrived in Kathmandu on a special chartered plane at the invitation of Nepalese President Dr Ram Baran Yadav. At the International airport in Kathmandu, Nepalese Foreign Minister Upendra Yadav welcomed the president and the first lady.

In the afternoon, President Dr Ram Baran Yadav welcomed Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa at his official residence called Shitalnivas. Foreign Minister Upendra Yadav called on the Sri Lankan President at Hotel Soaltee Crowne Plaza, Kathmandu.

On March 3, 2009, Prime Minister Prachanda met with the Sri Lankan President at his office, Singhadurbar, Kathmandu. During the meeting the Sri Lankan President proposed to make Lumbini the world peace center.

In the presence of the Sri Lankan President and the Nepalese Prime Minister, Nepalese Tourism Minister Hisila Yami and her Sri Lankan counterpart signed on the Memorandum of Understanding on the direct air-link between Nepal and Sri Lanka. Similarly, Acting Foreign Minister Jayaprakash Prasad Gupta and his Sri Lankan counterpart signed on the memorandum of Understanding on industry and commerce.

Sri Lankan President has cut short his visit to Nepal and is returning to Sri Lanka today instead of tomorrow canceling his visit to Lumbini scheduled for tomorrow due to the terrorists’ attacks on the members of the Sri Lankan cricket team in Pakistan.
