Stop Selling Land To Nepalis Movement
By KTM Reporter
June 4, 2010: the news posted on the Hindustantimes.com states that members of the organization called ‘Bangla o Bangla Bhasa Bachao’ based in the plain area of Darjeeling district have surrounded the sub-registry office there demanding to stop the sale of land to Nepalis labeling them as foreigners. ‘Bangla o Bangla Bhasa Bachao’ is an Anti-Gorkhaland body that has been rallying against the demand of the Nepali speaking Indians for their own state called Gorkhaland. They have been feeling the heat of the rule of the Bengal State Government so they want a separate state called Gorkhaland comprising mainly the hill area called Darjeeling.
President of Bangla o Bangla Bhasa Bachao Committee Dr Mukunda Majumder has said that the Nepalese nationals have been enjoying free access to India and purchasing land in Siliguri and its adjacent areas posing a serious threat to the state following the Nepal-India Treaty of 1950. He has said that the Treaty has been defective as the Government of Nepal has ignored the few provisions in the Treaty denying Indian nationals to purchase land in Nepal whereas the Nepalese nationals have been enjoying the privilege of residence, buying property, doing businesses in trade and commerce and so on. Dr Mukunda Majumder has threatened to take the issue to the law court if the demand for stopping the sale of land to Nepalis is not met.
