Students Protesting Against Price-rise In Petroleum Products

Issue 38, September 16, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

September 10, 2012: students had shown some concerns for the common folks protesting against the price-rise in petroleum products at the office of Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) in Kathmandu yesterday but today they were back on the streets to shut down the regular vehicular traffic causing immense troubles to the common folks. These poor students unleashed by the unscrupulous politicians to protest on the streets should understand that they have been doing the job for the politicians not for their own benefits.

These students also should understand that the price-rice is coming from India, as the NOC cannot go on supplying petroleum products at the lower prices than in India not only because of it has to bear the losses but also for not being able to supply petroleum products smoothly, as the cheap Nepalese petroleum products quickly flow to India.

Nepal has no alternative to follow the Indian prices of petroleum products. Some experts might argue that Nepal could buy petroleum products cheaply from China but again the cheap petroleum products quickly flow to India leaving Nepal high and dry again.

So, some wise student leaders should think about what they could achieve forcing the government to reduce the prices of petroleum products. Low prices of petroleum products in Nepal would not only bankrupt the NOC but also cause short supply of petroleum products, as most of the petroleum products designated to Nepal would end up remaining in India. So, students would be wise to stop protesting against the petroleum-product-price rise so that common folks could travel smoothly. However, students are rightly demanded to stop the irregularities in purchasing and selling petroleum products causing huge loses to the NOC. The corrupt administration is solely responsible for such irregularities.
