Success Of FM Radios In Nepal
By KTM Metro Reporter
November 5, 2012: Nepal has developed FM radio stations tremendously. Number of FM radio stations has grown so many that the prices of advertisements have gone down tremendously. Currently, more than 300 FM radio stations have been operating in Nepal. The government of Nepal has issued 435 licenses to operate FM radios.
Due to so many FM radio stations operating in Nepal, the prices of ads have gone from Rs 150 for a single 15-second commercial ad in between 2003 and 2008 to a one-minute commercial to Rs 20 to Rs 50 today according to the Radio World.
FM has been the overwhelmingly preferred medium for private broadcasting due to its superior audio quality. Most of the FM radios have been the sources of news, music and entertainment for the Nepalis living elsewhere in Nepal.
FM radio sets are very cheap. So, most of the poor Nepalese could afford to have FM radios even though sometimes they might face the problem of having cash to purchase batteries for powering their radios. In addition, such FM radios are the only sources of any news, views and entertainment, as most of the TVs have remained in urban centers but overwhelming population of Nepal is rural.
