Issue 51, December 18, 2011

By KTM Metro Reporter

December 14, 2011: deputy registrar of the Supreme Court of Nepal has refused to register the contempt of court case against the Minister for Law Brijesh Kumar Gupta by advocate Upendranandan Timilsina yesterday, ‘gorkhapatra’ of today reports.

A few days ago speaking at an event held by Nepal Bar Association in Dang: western Nepal, Minister Gupta has said that he is surprised when some justices came with a bagful of money asking him for promotion; even the court has been the center of corruption. He wonders how the common folks would have fair justice if justices also were for giving bribes.

He also has proposed to expropriate the assets of the corrupt people. He has said that the public figures should declare the assets of three generations and the government needs to assess the properties of such public figures and expropriate the illegally earned assets.

The minister also has said that the corruption at the courts would not go away as long as the courts also are not brought under the jurisdiction of the corruption law.

Some justices have challenged the ministers to make public the names of justices that have come to him with money seeking promotion. It has been open secrete that the corruption has been flourishing every where in Nepal otherwise Nepal would not be last but one on the list of corrupt nations in the South Asia.
