Suspended King Can Stay as a Commoner

Issue 16, April 20, 2008

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

Maoists’ Second-in-Command Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has said that the suspended king can stay on in Nepal as a commoner even after the abolition of the monarchy. He gave four weeks to the suspended king to vacate the palace he has been using since he ascended the throne after the wipeout of his brother King Birendra and his family in a massacre on June 01, 2001. Dr. Bhattarai has said that the king can live in Nepal as an honorable citizen if he abides by the law of land as a commoner.

The Interim Legislature-parliament declared Nepal a federal democratic republic on December 29, 2007 with the provision for the CA to endorse it in its first session, suspended the king and made the Prime Minister an officiating Head of State.
