Kathmandu: The Sub-project-2 of the Melamchi Drinking Water Development Board is testing the pipes laid for distributing the water from the Melamchi River in the mid August diverting the water from the Bagmati River to the water-treatment center at Sundarijal in Kathmandu; chemicals will be used for purifying the water that runs for testing to find out any leakages from the pipes, the news in the ‘artha bazaar’ section of “gorkhapatra” of today stated.
According to the news, the project has spent NPR 2.97 billion ($ 297 million) on laying the pipes for distributing the water from the Melamchi River within the ring road in Kathmandu; 80 percent of the project cost has been for laying the pipes and 15 percent for constructing water tanks at different places such as Arubari, Mahankalchaur, Bansbari, Panipokhari, and Balaju in Kathmandu, Khumaltar in Lalitpur; however, the completion of entire work on laying pipes and construction of water tanks will be completed only in 2020.
The water from the Melamchi River will be passed through the tunnel of 27.5 km long, and dropped in the water-treatment center in Sundarijal, and then distributed to various destinations of the Kathmandu Valley.
However, the recent news has it that the contractor digging the last 2.75 km of the tunnel has been facing the problem of soft rock that has delayed the progress in constructing the tunnel. Probably, the target of supplying water from the Melamchi River set for October this year might miss, and might take another six months before the water actually flow from the Melamchi River to Sundarijal, and then the different destinations for distribution to the consumers.
