Thirteen Years Of Freedom For Kamaiyas
By KTM Metro Reporter
July 17, 2013: former Kamaiyas means bonded laborers have been celebrating the 13th year of their freedom from the bonded laborers today but they have not been able to get freedom from the poverty and the hunger.
As part of the rehabilitation, the government has provided them with the land ownership certificates but they have no land; so the certificates have been only the scarps of papers, according to the news posted on ‘gorkhaparaonline.com.’
When they had been bonded laborers until July 2000 they had no problem of feeding but now after the freedom from the bondage they have the problems of feeding themselves. They have the changes in their lives but the changes have been the poverty and hunger. So, they have been preparing to put pressure on the government to make sure they get the land as mentioned in the certificate, so that they could build a new life on the land.
Currently, they have neither the land they are supposed to get nor the jobs to feed their families and themselves.
Most of the former Kamaiyas are in the districts such as Kailali, Kanchanpur, Bardiya, Banke and Dang in Far Western Nepal.
