May 27, 2011: Ambassadors of the European Union countries to Nepal have met with Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Prachanda at his Nayabazar residence in Kathmandu yesterday, and have held talks on the current political situation in view of the ending of the term of the Constituent Assembly (CA) on May 28, 2011.
The International Community has been concerned with the status of the peace process in Nepal and promulgation of a new constitution, and has been ready to provide Nepal with any support required for completing the peace process and promulgation of a new constitution.
Chairman Prachanda has informed the diplomats about the peace process and the consensus political parties have reached on extending the term of CA so far. He has told the ambassadors of the EU that the political parties will extend the term of the CA through consensus.
The European envoys had held a similar meeting with President of Nepali Congress Sushil Koirala on Tuesday, May 24, 2011.
At the same time, CPN-UML and Nepali Congress (NC) leaders have said that the extension of the term of the CA is possible only after completing the peace process.
These NC guys have prevented the peace process from moving forward not agreeing on integrating the Maoist combatants for the first year; then the coalition government of the NC and CPN-UML placed the peace process on hold for 20 months disagreeing on the integration of the combatants. Currently, these guys have agreed on letting 5,000 Maoists combatants joining the Nepal Army, they want it done within a few days as the condition for extending the term of the CA. the UCPN-Maoist leaders say that it is impossible to do so within such a short period.
