Kathmandu: The widespread notion and the publicity have been that the middle persons in the vegetable business have been taking tremendous benefits exploiting the farmers on the one hand paying low prices to the farmers for the vegetable on the other hands exploiting the consumers charging high prices to the consumers for vegetables.
A team headed by the Department of Commerce, Supplies and Consumers’ Protection went to monitor the prices of vegetables at the Kalimati Vegetable Wholesale Market early in the morning at 3.00 AM on August 20, 2018; the team demanded the bills of the vegetable from the trucks carrying varieties of vegetables just arrived in Kathmandu, and then the arguments started off between the monitoring team and the traders, the news in “artha bazaar” of “gorkhapatra” published on August 21, 2018 stated, and the news continued as follow.
Then the traders encircled the members of the monitoring team, and locked the gate to the vegetable market, and the traders shouted slogan at the gate after the monitoring team took the trucks in custody, said Deepak Raj Pokharel: coordinator of the monitoring team, He also said, “We did not come to monitor the Kalimati Vegetable Market without reasons; we have the proof of the vegetables have been six times dearer when the vegetables reached the consumers from the farmers’ field; so, we are here to monitor the prices of vegetables.”
A few days ago the prices of vegetables have skyrocketed; so, a departmental team went to the vegetable producing areas such as Dhading and Makwanpur to monitor the prices of vegetables in the field; the prices of vegetables have risen 5 to 6 rupees per kilogram; however, the prices have been increased six times here in Kathmandu, said team coordinator Pokharel.
Then, the monitoring team took whole sellers Bharat Khatiwada and Bimal Dhungana, and two drivers including the two trucks that have brought the vegetables in custody, and then turned them over to the police.
After receiving information on the vegetable traders have taken the members of the monitoring team in custody and stopped them from coming out, Minister for Industry, Commerce and Supplies Matrika Yadav reached the Kalimati Vegetable Market, and instructed the district administration to take the maximum possible actions against the traders that have obstructed the monitoring team.
Director General of Department of Commerce, Supplies and Consumers’ Protection: Yogendra Gauchan has said that the monitoring of the vegetable market has been done with the objective of reducing the middle persons in the vegetable production and marketing to a zero level, and to provide the consumers with vegetables at fair prices.
Federation of Fruits and Vegetables Traders has said that the government has taken the two trucks of vegetables and two traders in custody without seasons in the name of monitoring, and demanded the immediate release of those detained vegetable vendors and trucks, and the compensation for the vegetables in the trucks.
