Women Trafficking In Nepal

Issue 43, October 21, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

October 18, 2012: traditionally, women trafficking from Nepal had been to Indian towns such as Calcutta and Mumbai but recently, Chinese opened the Tibetan borders town such as Khasa, Sigatse, Kuti, and Kerung, as well as Lhasa for the Nepalese women to work at the brothels in these towns.

Not only the professional traffickers have sold Nepalese women in those towns of the both northern and southern neighbors but also some husbands, fathers and other relatives have sold women to the brothels in those towns. So, anybody could imagine how Nepalese women had been traded as commodities.

However, the Nepalese laws have not been severe enough to punish the perpetrators of such heinous crimes. Human rights organizations and activists have not paid sufficient attention to the crimes of human trafficking so far.

However, a Nepalese NGO called Maiti-Nepal has been actively engaged in rescuing the women sold in those brothels, and saving some of them before they reached those destinations. Maiti-Nepal also rehabilitates them. Founder and chairperson Maiti-Nepal Anuradha Koirala received the 2010 CNN Heroes Award in recognition of her contribution to anti-human trafficking efforts in Nepal.
